Before you install Sildur's Shaders
The downloads on this site do not work in Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Preview, or console editions.
Check the Minecraft version shown in the launcher profile you actually use, not only the newest version installed on the computer. Iris or OptiFine must support that profile. Launch the unmodified game once before adding a loader so Minecraft creates its folders and downloads the required version files.
Back up important worlds before changing Minecraft, Java, the mod loader, or a large modpack. A shader normally changes only rendering and does not edit blocks, but a full setup change can include other components. Close Minecraft before moving ZIP files so the shader menu refreshes cleanly at the next launch.
Choose Iris or OptiFine
| Loader | Best fit | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Iris | Current Fabric installations and Sodium performance | Use matching Iris, Fabric, and Minecraft versions |
| OptiFine | Older versions or existing OptiFine profiles | Download the exact build for your Minecraft version |
Iris is usually the simplest recommendation for a current Minecraft Java setup. OptiFine remains useful when an older version or established configuration depends on it. Do not install both in the same test profile. A clean profile with one loader makes troubleshooting much easier.
How to install Sildur's Shaders with Iris
Iris can create a Fabric profile with Iris and Sodium, giving shader support and useful rendering performance improvements. Download Iris from its official site or verified Modrinth project, and avoid third-party installers that bundle unrelated software.
Install Iris for your Minecraft version
Get Iris from its official site or Modrinth project, run the installer, and choose the Minecraft version you actually launch. Start the new Iris profile once.
Download a Sildur preset
Return to the download selector. Vibrant Medium is a practical first test; use Lite, Enhanced Default Fast, or Basic Fast on weaker hardware.
Open the shaderpacks folder
In Minecraft, open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs → Open Shader Pack Folder. If needed, the manual Windows path is
%appdata%\.minecraft\shaderpacks.Move and enable the ZIP
Place the downloaded ZIP directly in that folder. Do not extract it. Return to Minecraft, select the Sildur pack, and apply.
How to install Sildur's Shaders with OptiFine
Download the OptiFine build that exactly matches your Minecraft version. Run its installer only after the matching vanilla version has launched at least once. Select the new OptiFine profile in the official launcher, start the game, then open Options → Video Settings → Shaders.
Use the Shaders Folder button, move in the unextracted Sildur ZIP, return to the list, select the preset, and wait while resources reload. If the Shaders button is missing, confirm the launcher is using the OptiFine profile rather than the ordinary vanilla installation.
Manual shaderpacks folder locations
The in-game folder button is safest because custom launchers and instances can use different directories. If it is unavailable, the standard Windows location is %appdata%\.minecraft\shaderpacks. On macOS, the usual path is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/shaderpacks. On Linux, it is commonly ~/.minecraft/shaderpacks.
Create the shaderpacks directory only inside the correct game instance. MultiMC, Prism Launcher, CurseForge, and other launchers often keep separate instance folders, so placing a ZIP in the global folder may not affect the profile you launch.
First launch and performance check
After you install Sildur's Shaders, load a familiar world and wait until chunks finish loading. Check water, foliage, interiors, rain, sunrise, and the Nether if those areas matter to your play. Vibrant Medium is a useful default for gaming hardware, but Lite, Enhanced Default Fast, and Basic Fast provide safer baselines.
If FPS is low, lower shadow resolution, volumetric lighting, reflection quality, and render distance in that order. Test one change at a time. Resolution also matters: a high-density laptop display can render far more pixels than a 1080p monitor and can make the same preset substantially slower.
How to update Sildur's Shaders
Leave the old ZIP in place while testing the new release. Download the new preset, confirm its filename and version, place it beside the old file, and select it in the shader menu. Record custom settings before switching because a new rendering pipeline may rename options or change defaults.
Once the updated build loads correctly in the same world and profile, remove the old ZIP if you no longer need a fallback. Do not overwrite or rename archives to make them look like another preset. The original filename helps you identify the branch, version, and effect variant later.
How to confirm the installation worked
A successful installation changes the scene immediately after you select the pack and apply it. Open the shader menu again and confirm that the active entry shows the expected Sildur family and preset. Look for dynamic shadows, changed water, sky or fog behavior, and lighting that responds to the time of day. The exact effects depend on Vibrant, Enhanced Default, or Basic.
If the menu names the pack but the world looks unchanged, make sure shaders are enabled and not set to an internal or off option. Reload the world once, then restart the game if the loader recently changed. Do not judge the result from the title screen because the shader pipeline is easiest to verify inside a world.
You can also confirm the archive itself before or after installation. The three product pages publish the exact filename, byte-scale file size, Modrinth version ID, and SHA-512 checksum for every current preset. On Windows, run Get-FileHash "file.zip" -Algorithm SHA512. On macOS or Linux, use shasum -a 512 "file.zip". Matching values show that the ZIP is identical to the verified release record.
After learning how to install Sildur's Shaders, keep the chosen loader profile separate from experimental modpacks. A known-good profile gives you a quick comparison when a future Minecraft, driver, or renderer update causes a problem.
Troubleshooting Sildur's Shaders installation
The shader does not appear in the list
Confirm the file ends in .zip, is directly inside shaderpacks, and was not placed in resourcepacks, mods, or nested inside an extra folder. Make sure the folder belongs to the launcher instance currently running.
Minecraft becomes very slow
Try Vibrant Lite, Enhanced Default Fast, or Basic Fast. Reduce render distance, shadow resolution, volumetric lighting quality, and reflection settings before changing unrelated options. Verify that Minecraft uses the dedicated GPU when the computer has two graphics processors.
The screen is black or the shader fails to compile
Update the GPU driver, verify Iris or OptiFine matches the Minecraft version, disable conflicting rendering mods, then test a clean profile. Older integrated GPUs may not support every effect in the heavier presets.
Can I install multiple presets?
Yes. Each preset ZIP appears separately in the Shader Packs list, but only one shader pack is active at a time. Keeping a lighter preset installed makes quick performance comparisons easier.
Should I extract the Sildur ZIP?
No. Iris and OptiFine read the shader archive directly. Extraction can create an extra nested folder or separate files that the shader menu does not recognize.
Why did settings reset after an update?
Large updates can change option names, defaults, or the rendering pipeline. Note customized values before updating and recreate them carefully instead of copying an incompatible settings file.
